The BSGI were delighted to present a thought provoking session at RCOG Congress this year centred on the future of gynaecological imaging and service delivery.
As her last professional engagement as BSGI President, Mrs Leena Gokhale co-chaired the session alongside Dr Lam Wai Cheung from the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
The BSGI wish to extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Phil Newton for joining our session and presenting his research on the past, present and future capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) in relation to ultrasound training and education. Prof Newton recently spent some time with BSGI Vice President Alan Treharne identifying the possibility of AI creating ultrasound images for the purposes of training and the results were to say the least most interesting.
BSGI Secretary Mr. Lukasz Polanski offered an excellent insight into the role Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) can play in ensuring timely diagnosis and management of patients. Mr Polanski spoke passionately about the benefits of clinicians scanning and interpreting images for their own patients in relation to clinical decision making and improved patient care.
Long Standing BSGI committee member Miss Ghada Salman delivered a powerful talk on the evolution of AI technology within the medical community and how our imaging practices may be supported and influenced by AI in the future. Miss Salman delved in the learning capabilities of AI and how our good practice can support the future standards of its inclusion.
The post presentation discussion saw our panel tackle some excellent questions from the audience addressing the availability of quality ultrasound training in order to deliver PoCUS across more trusts and how future training may be impacted with the introduction of AI.
The session was most definitely a BSGI highlight from the three day event.
BSGI Vice President Alan Treharne enjoyed connected with delegates and exhibitors across the vast location, and came away from the Congress excited by the conversations that had taken place. Mr Treharne reported how beneficial the event was for specialist societies to come together and share the work they do with a wider audience; the national and international connections made will only strengthen our shared goal of improving women’s health services across the globe.
