Alan Treharne - Vice President

Alan is delighted to continue supporting the British Society for Gynaecological Imaging as Vice President, having previously served as Treasurer, Secretary and Trainee Representative. A longstanding and committed member of the Society, he has played an active role in delivering educational events, developing collaborative relationships with partner organisations and supporting the advancement of high-quality gynaecological imaging across the UK.

As a Consultant Gynaecologist in rural West Wales, Alan has a particular passion for community gynaecology and the delivery of accessible, high-quality diagnostic services closer to patients’ homes. He is a strong advocate for community diagnostics and the development of one-stop gynaecology services, where expert clinical assessment and ultrasound can be combined to provide timely diagnosis, reduce unnecessary hospital visits and improve the patient experience.

Alan has a specialist interest in point-of-care ultrasound and believes diagnostic ultrasound should be an integral part of everyday gynaecological practice. He is involved in several innovative projects aimed at transforming the way ultrasound-led gynaecology services are delivered in Wales and is passionate about supporting clinicians to develop the skills and confidence to incorporate ultrasound into routine clinical care.

Education remains central to Alan’s work. He is committed to expanding practical, hands-on ultrasound training and multidisciplinary learning opportunities through the BSGI, while continuing to strengthen collaboration with colleagues across the specialty to advance education, innovation and excellence in gynaecological imaging.

Lukasz Polanski - Secretary

Mr Lukasz Polanski completed his medical degree at the Medical University of Lublin, Poland in 2007. He has been awarded a PhD in 2016 from the University of Nottingham, UK, for his work on sonographic and molecular markers of endometrial receptivity.

He completed his Obstetrics and Gynaecology training in the East of England Deanery. He completed subspecialty training in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, London. He is experienced in management of women with early pregnancy complications, benign gynaecological conditions, including endometriosis, and couples with primary and secondary infertility.

He is an expert gynaecological sonographer. He has extensive experience with hysteroscopic surgery and abdominal myomectomy.

He has presented and published extensively on topics of reproductive medicine and gynaecological & early pregnancy ultrasound. His research interest include recurrent miscarriage and recurrent implantation failure following assisted reproductive treatment and pregnancy outcomes following surgical interventions for uterine pathologies.

Ghada Salman - Treasurer

Ghada Salman is a consultant Gynaecologist at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) where she works in the world-renowned general gynaecology and early pregnancy unit. Her main areas of interest are gynaecological ultrasound, benign gynaecology and benign gynaecological surgery, emergency gynaecology and early pregnancy care.

Following completion of post graduate training in North West London including registrar posts at Queen Charlotte and Chelsea and Westminster hospitals, Ms Salman was appointed as a substantive Consultant Gynaecologist at UCLH in 2011. Subsequently she completed a master’s degree (MSc) in the Ultrasound of Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy at Kings College, London in 2013 and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist (FRCOG) in 2017.

Ms Salman manages patients with a wide range of symptoms, including heavy or painful periods, pelvic pain, and irregular bleeding. She also performs different gynaecological surgery including open, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery. As an expert in ultrasound, she can diagnose and treat a wide range of benign gynaecological conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, and ovarian cysts. She also has a special interest and expertise in Urogynaecological mesh scanning, and is a member of the London Complex
Mesh Centre at UCLH, the leading centre for the treatment of mesh complications and mesh removal.

Ms Salman is an active committee member of the British Society for Gynaecological Imaging (BSGI) and has published many papers and presented her work on early pregnancy, gynaecological ultrasound, and endoscopic gynaecology both nationally and internationally. She is also the author of numerous scientific chapters and papers in this field.

Leena Gokhale - Past President

Leena Gokhale is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with over two decades of clinical experience, specialising in ambulatory gynaecological procedures, advanced ultrasound, minimal access surgery, and gynaecological oncology. She currently leads Gynaecology and Gynae-Oncology services across the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Her academic background includes an MSc in Reproductive Health from the University of Warwick, where she researched the relationship between breast cancer and HRT, alongside the RCOG/RCR Diploma in Advanced Obstetric Ultrasound. Passionate about education, Lena has held roles as Clinical Lecturer at Cardiff University, ultrasound course organiser, MSc dissertation module lead, and examiner—mentoring more than ten trainees over ten years.

Leena has been a dedicated member of the British Society for Gynaecological Imaging (BSGI) since 2007, serving as CPD Officer, Committee Member, Treasurer, Vice President, and most recently, President. Now serving as Past President, she continues to champion the society’s mission of promoting excellence in gynaecological imaging through high-quality education, standardised reporting guidelines, and peer-reviewed practice.

Her presidency has been marked by several key initiatives and events, including the successful delivery of hands-on ultrasound workshops.  She has also championed collaboration with other specialist societies, including a well-attended joint study day with the British Gynaecological Cancer Society.

As she transitions into her role as Past President, Lena extends her warm congratulations to Mr Anthony Griffiths and Mr Alan Treharne, the newly elected President and Vice President of BSGI. She remains committed to supporting the Society and its members, with a continuing focus on innovation, inclusivity, and excellence in imaging education.

Neil Pugh

Professor Neil Pugh is a long-standing member of the BSGI Committee, bringing extensive expertise in clinical science, ultrasound, research and education to the Society.

Recently retired from his role as Consultant Clinical Scientist and Head of the Non-Ionising Section within Radiology, Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, Neil continues his academic work as an Honorary Professor of Engineering at Cardiff University.

Neil has a strong background in ultrasound and is heavily involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, having acted as module organiser for a number of courses. He also heads an active research group, with interests including novel ultrasound techniques in the diagnosis of vascular disease and the application and analysis of ultrasound imaging in gynaecology and fertility. His research has resulted in numerous publications.

Through his long-standing involvement with the BSGI, Neil contributes valuable expertise in ultrasound, research and education to support the Society and the wider field of gynaecological imaging.

Joseph Iskaros

Joseph is a consultant and honorary associate professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University College London Hospitals (UCLH). Joseph was one of the founding members of the BSGI and served in several roles and continues to be incredibly supportive of society activities.

Joseph has been an active organiser of the annual ASM’s and the joint sonographers meetings over the years.

He has been elected to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologist’s council to represent London RCOG Fellows.

Vicky Minns

Vicky is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Epsom & St Helier NHS Trust, having taken up her substantive consultant post in October 2025.

A long-standing advocate for high-quality gynaecological ultrasound education, Vicky previously served as the BSGI’s Trainee Representative, where she championed the development of imaging skills among trainees. She is passionate about teaching and supporting residents and medical students, believing that ultrasound is fundamental to modern gynaecological practice. A familiar face at BSGI educational events, Vicky regularly volunteers as faculty for the Society’s practical workshops, where she enjoys mentoring delegates and helping them build confidence in gynaecological ultrasound.

With a Postgraduate Certificate in Early Pregnancy and Gynaecological Ultrasound, Vicky has a particular interest in integrating imaging into everyday clinical practice. She is currently working towards BSCCP accreditation in colposcopy and has a growing interest in minimal access surgery, enjoying the opportunity to combine expert ultrasound assessment with surgery by using detailed imaging to map gynaecological pathology and guide surgical planning.

Vicky is committed to inspiring the next generation of gynaecologists and hopes to see transvaginal ultrasound training become an integral part of obstetrics and gynaecology training. Outside of work, Vicky enjoys spending time with her young family, exploring the outdoors and making the most of opportunities to catch up with friends.

Eman Elkattan

Miss Elkattan is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in early pregnancy, gynaecological scanning and ambulatory gynaecology. She works within Hywel Dda University Health Board in West Wales.

She graduated from Cairo University Teaching Hospital in Egypt in 2000. She subsequently obtained her Master’s degree and MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology before completing her specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Scotland, UK, achieving her CCT in 2017.

She undertook a fellowship in early pregnancy and gynaecological scanning at King’s College London. She also worked as a Gynaecological Oncology Fellow in Surrey, where she ran one-stop gynaecology clinics, and currently runs similar clinics within Hywel Dda University Health Board.

She has a particular interest in medical education and ultrasound training. She obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from Cardiff University in 2023 and a Diploma in Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2025.

She has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals, reflecting her interest and expertise in gynaecological scanning. She is also a reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Ultrasound and the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics.
