The BSGI is delighted to celebrate its President, Anthony Griffiths, who has been named April’s “Health Hero” in recognition of his exceptional dedication to patient care.
A Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Mr Griffiths has devoted nearly two decades to improving outcomes for women, with a particular focus in recent years on endometriosis. His work has supported countless patients living with chronic pelvic pain and infertility—areas central to the mission of the BSGI.
This prestigious recognition was driven by a powerful patient nomination, highlighting not only clinical excellence but also the compassion, empathy and clarity that define Mr Griffiths’ approach. The patient described how, over several years of care culminating in major surgery, he demonstrated “grace, humour and pragmatism,” empowering her to make informed decisions and feel truly heard throughout her journey.
For Mr Griffiths, moments of connection and validation are at the heart of his work. He reflected that one of the most meaningful aspects of his role comes at the point of diagnosis—when patients, often after years of uncertainty, realise their symptoms are understood and believed. This patient-centred philosophy closely aligns with the values of the BSGI, particularly in advancing the diagnosis and management of complex conditions such as endometriosis through high-quality imaging and multidisciplinary care.
Beyond diagnosis, he emphasised the profound impact of treatment, describing the privilege of seeing patients regain quality of life after years of debilitating symptoms. Many share stories of disrupted education, relationships and careers—making their recovery all the more significant.
Mr Griffiths’ recognition as a Health Hero also reflects his wider commitment to advocacy and awareness. During Endometriosis Awareness Month, he joined a local march in Cardiff, where he spoke passionately about the resilience of patients, stating: “My hero is every patient who has come through our doors after years of suffering.”
Despite the accolade, Mr Griffiths remains characteristically humble, dedicating the recognition to both his patients and the multidisciplinary teams who support them.
As BSGI President, his leadership continues to inspire excellence in gynaecological imaging and patient-centred care across the UK and beyond. This award is a fitting acknowledgement of his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of women affected by complex gynaecological conditions.
