The British Society for Gynaecological Imaging (BSGI) extends its warmest congratulations to Professor Ranee Thakar, President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), on her appointment as Honorary Professor of Women’s Health at the University of Liverpool.

This esteemed position will see Professor Thakar collaborate with the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at the Institute of Life Course and Medical Sciences, along with other academic partners, to support research, education, and clinical innovation in women’s health—both across the UK and globally.

Professor Thakar is internationally recognised for her leadership in the field of urogynaecology, particularly for her work on obstetric anal sphincter injuries, where she led a national initiative that significantly reduced injury rates across maternity units. She is a passionate advocate for racial equity and inclusion in women’s health, and has developed impactful educational programmes that address disparities in care and outcomes.

In December 2022, Professor Thakar was elected President of the RCOG—making history as the first woman of colour and only the third woman in the College’s 96-year history to hold the position. She is also a Consultant Obstetrician and Urogynaecologist at Croydon University Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s University of London.

Speaking on her new appointment, Professor Thakar said:

“I am truly passionate about championing women’s health and it is a real honour to have been appointed as Honorary Professor of Women’s Health at the University of Liverpool. When I graduated from my medical studies in India, I never thought I would have such fantastic opportunities to collaborate with incredible people and organisations dedicated to making a difference to the lives of women and girls around the world.”

The University of Liverpool has welcomed this new collaboration as part of its broader strategic efforts to strengthen academic leadership and global partnerships in women’s health. The announcement follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and RCOG during a visit to India, which also marked the launch of the University’s first international campus in Bengaluru.
