New Ultrasound Scanner Transforms Services in Mid Wales
A significant investment in diagnostic imaging is set to transform community gynaecology services in Mid Wales, with the introduction of a state-of-the-art ultrasound scanner now in use at the Cardigan Integrated Care Centre in Ceredigion.
The scanner, which features advanced gynaecological imaging software, will allow clinicians to provide high-quality, community-based diagnostics outside of the traditional hospital setting. This move is expected to significantly improve access to care for women, reduce waiting times, and relieve pressure on acute services.
Mr Alan Treharne, Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and BSGI Honorary Treasurer, welcomed the development, describing the scanner as a “game-changer” for the delivery of women’s health services in the region.
“This equipment will make a real difference to how we deliver care,” said Mr Treharne. “Its advanced capabilities will allow us to offer a broader range of gynaecological diagnostics directly in the community, freeing up hospital appointments and streamlining the patient pathway.”
The initiative reflects growing support across Wales for a health hub model, in which patients can receive timely diagnostics and care in local, non-hospital settings. This approach supports the Welsh Government’s focus on prudent healthcare and is seen as a sustainable solution for improving patient access while maintaining high clinical standards.
Alongside its diagnostic use, the scanner will also play a role in training and upskilling healthcare professionals, strengthening the delivery of women’s health services across the region.
The BSGI would also like to acknowledge the Friends of Cardigan and Community Health Care, whose generous donation enabled the purchase of this equipment, making a lasting investment in women’s health and community care in Mid Wales.
